Update 01-04

Postby jab » Mon Jan 05, 2009 4:34 am

I started that thread a little over 3 month ago, so I guess it's time to take stock. (Is that even a proper term to use, meaning to evaluate the situation/changes?)
Since then I got 42 new feature films (+ a few shorts), have replaced a further 12 and have seen about 50 Korean films, that were new to me, 2 of them on the big screen. Not the fastest pace I've had, but I've been a bit busier and it provided a good flow of new stuff. I have made good on my plan to reduce the non-korean films to one shelf, and I think it's much better now, even though there still are some films/editions I don't care too much about. As I previously said, I somehow like the idea, that whenever I am getting something new, I'll have to let something else go. Let's see how that works out. ;) Because the collection was growing disproportionately with Films released in 2008 and before 1995 I had to re-order it and actually split the lot to store the pre-2000 films in a different shelf. I should now be able to sort new arrivals, without having to stack them up. So far I've not been proven wrong about believing that most/almost all of these films will never be released on Blu-Ray in Korea, and with the launch of the first big commercial IPTV broadcasters and VOD still on the rise, I have not read/heard anything that made me think otherwise. The one thing I didn't manage to do, was provide you guys with regular pictures.
So what's in store for 2009? Well, I don't do New Years Resolutions, but I do want to go to the cinema more often than I did in 2008. I really missed that sometimes and the only thing that kept me was being a lazy anti-social bum. (Well that, and the swindling number of films shown with original sound and the rising ticket costs.)
I'll get to see 2 new Korean Independent films in January ("Written" and "Daytime Drinking") and I hope to get some tickets for the Berlinale (February) this year - and who knows what will happen in the summer. I'm hoping for a few smaller film festivals to return!
When it comes to my collection: I'm still missing ~375 films/dvds + ~50DVDs of independet films and want to replace ~95DVDs with more collactable versions, so there's still a lot to do. For the first time I have actually made a list of the DVDs I most want to get, but it seems like I don't reach the right people and it will be more a list for myself. Nevertheless it will be interesting how many I can actually get/find during this year. I just hope that not too many stores dissappear like DVDfromKorea. The ways to get DVDs from Korea are rather limited at the moment, so prices are often unnecessarily high, which mostly means that I won't get them.
I also have hopes for some new DVD releases, like 하녀 [The Housemaid] (that one has been in the work for a looong time), 여름이 가기 전에 [Before the Summer Passes Away], 나의 친구, 그의 아내 [My Friend & His Wife], Cut! (Short by Royston Tan)... etc. It will be interesting to see if there are many good DVDs released this year (a proper DVD of Ashes of Time (not the redux version) is probably too much to hope for) or if major studios, criterion, moc & co will concentrate on releasing their classics on Blu-Ray. I'm also curios how the attempt to market Blu-Rays in China will work out.
When it comes to new films, I'm not that well informed (something I want to change asap) but rumour has it 박쥐 [Thirst] is slatet for an April release, so we might get a DVD later this year. (And I'm fairly certain it will show up on a lot of festivals) 잘 알지도 못하면서 [You Don’t Even Know] & 파리의 어떤 한 여자 [A Woman in Paris] hopefully get their funding straight and will be shot sometime this year as well. For most other Korean Films I have more of a "let's-wait-and-see" attitude.
WKW might finally start shooting 一代宗師葉問 [Grandmaster IP Man], I really hope the success of Donnie Yen's "Ip Man" doesn't stop that project! The restoration of Metropolis could be finished late this year, so I'm hoping for a theatrical release. With Tarantino's "Inglourious Basterds", Michael Mann's "Public Enemies" (and maybe "Brothers Bloom") there might even be some worthy Hollywood Entertainment. Oh, I'll probably watch "Che" when it's released here.
But more than anything else I'm looking forward to what is one of the reasons I love cinema: being deeply moved by something totally unexpected!

Here are some quick pics to show how it looks like right now:

I'll probably update the first post with some more detailed pictures in a few days/weeks.

Bloody Beach

Postby jab » Fri Jan 09, 2009 8:21 pm

I've made some mistakes in the post above: I forgot to include the last update while counting: I actually got 42 new films in that time frame, not 39; and after some questions from Morty and revisiting my lists I changed the number of Korean feature films released on DVD that I don't have from ~450 to ~375 which is probably a better estimate. (I can currently name 363 and I think I know a little bit about what has been released, and what hasn't.)
This actually means, that in all likeliness I am already over half way there. I actually wouldn't have guessed that.

Btw: here's the reason I still haven't opened the "Marathon" LE, even though I really want to see the content and listen to the OST:
Image
Yes, there's a sticker on the shrinkwrap and if that sticker doesn't mean it's actually numbered I don't know what else. Very few places (actually HKFlix is the only one I could find) even mention that this set is numbered. (didn't know that before I got it) And all pictures I had seen (Here in the Forum, at genesis' blog, madmad etc.) have been from opened sets and did not show the number-sticker.
The high number should also show that the often copied note "Limited to 3,000 quantity only " put forward by asiandb is probably wrong.

Anyway, I received this one today:

Bloody Beach: German DVD with double-sided cover:

One of those films that have been released in Korea on VCD, but not on DVD. (And I'm no fan of VCDs ) I actually wanted to get the HK DVD, because it offers english subtitles, but then again this german release is at least in anamorphic widescreen and has a making-of/behind the scenes feature.

Thanks Anton! (I'll reply to your PM sometime this weekend.)

Giggles wrote:Like those covers!  :borat:  Gotta find out more about the movie...

Well, afaik it's just a standard cheap teen-slasher film. (But I haven't seen it, yet.) Here's the trailer:

English subs are afaik only on the HK DVD & VCD. (Only German subs on this DVD.)

I generally don't like horror films, especially Slasher/Gore types, but judging from your collection I think you do ;)
I'm not sure whether you read twitch, but whenever I read their coverage of Mum & Dad, I thought you might like it. If you haven't heard of that one yet, you can see the trailers here, an exclusive clip here  or read their review. The official website is here and they said they'd release it simultaneously in theatres, DVD and download - so you should be able to get it.

Yeah, I like them, but they're just cheapos from IKEA

BTW: My on-order list is slowly growing again, and I've just read, that there will be some KD-Media re-releases/bargains at the end of January, some of which I don't have yet ...  :norty:

Are you sure you can't start topics? (Only in the Trading Section you need 100 posts to make a topic.) If it's really a problem you should PM a mod.

Anyway, here's not the really the right place to ask, but I'll try to answer your questions: I've not heard any news that there are Blu-Ray Discs in planning for these two films. I don't think there will be a Korean BD release anytime soon (I could well be wrong, though), but if they sort out the international rights, I'm sure somebody in Europe/America will release these two films on BD.
So far only 3 Korean films have been released on Blu-Ray in Korea: The Host, Welcome to Dongmakgol and Taegukgi. (I'm not counting D-War) There are many more on BD from other countries, though. You should check asianblurayguide! They are doing a good job. (SneakerPimp is also on this forum) If I read something new about Korean BD releases I'll let them know. (They were quite quick adding stuff, last time I did so.)

Check info & pics here (last third of page 7) - it's a nice set!

I actually meant to do some updates and add the links to the first page, but for once it would be fair to say that I've been busy and not just lazy.

I was actually hoping to get the edition with a slipcase, but I'm looking for the Box Set with all 6 films anyway. Even though it was very cheap a few years ago, I can't find it anywhere. :| (At least not for a decent price.)

Apart from the 3 DVDs above, today I have also received my DVD from didos giveaway. :oohyeah:

My only Criterion Collection DVD! I was always afraid that if I bought one of these I wouldn't stop until I wouldn't get a loan any more, because they have remastered so many films I like. (And if that's not enough the simple fact that they number their releases (this one is #182) would've driven me insane, because my collectors instinct would've probably taken over ...)
Luckily (for my bank account) my collection and habits have changed a little over the last couple of month, therefore this will stay my only Criterion. At least for now.
Here it is once again in all it's glory:
