My first one of this lovely series - and what a beauty! I absolutely love, what the KOFA has put out until now! (though in addition to this DVD I only own the Shin Sang-Ok Collection and the Past Unearthed Box (both are among my favorite Boxsets & Films) - but i will track down everything they have released!)
I just hope that they continue to distribute restored 35mm-copies to various festivals and bring us more of the glorious past of Korean Cinema! (Oh, and it would be nice if they kept their announced release dates at least once ...)

If the Sun Rises in the West: Amaray with 4-page booklet:

This was/is an SRE Corp. release, but after they went bankrupt Starmax bought the rights for this film, therefore the different ITAN and Publisher stickers on the plastic foil (they usually put these on the covers). One thing I don't quite get is, why they bothered doing this in the first place, since Myung Films was/is afaik the company publishing this DVD.

It seems like they only put the english dubbed version (with the wrong aspect ratio) on Disc 2, I'll have to check wheter there's any other difference or extras.

I'm not so sure about the jacket (they really could've used leather instead of printing stitches etc.), but I do like the booklet!

Obviously the specs on the DVD are wrong: there's no Italian in this film . This is (as expected from Cine Korea) a port of the US Image Entertainment DVD, which means there's a DD2.0 music score and the intertitles are in Russian with burned in yellow English subs and optional blue Korean subtitles, which are hard to read, because they overlap with the English ones. The highly regarded Audio Commentary with Vance Kepley, Jr. is sadly not included. (btw: those bright stripes are printed and not photoflash)

I have been looking for this film for quite some time and when I noticed that I would miss this years screening in one of my favorite cinemas (which is named after this film!) I decided to opt for the Korean DVD. I have heard people argue that this classic is as essential for early film studies as un chien andalou and Vertov's Enthusiasm. I have to admit, though, that russian language films, and the period between 1925 and 1960 are - together with African Cinema - the biggest holes in the canon of films I have seen. So if you put those two together, it's getting really dark (I haven't seen a single film by Pudowkin!) ... this will be the very first Dowschenko I will watch.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to this rare treat!
